Sonata in A Minor is one of Several works for string bass. It is an excellent composition for bass clarinet or B flat contra-bass clarinet in style as as range. With the exception of measure 26 of the first movment, whihc has an alternate choice of notes, the range of the entire sonata stays in the rich lower register of these instruments. For the contra-bass clarinet, the range extends down to low d in measures 13, 15, 32, and 34 in the first movement. Musically, and technically, this composition is challenging and rewarding for either the young aggresive student or the mature musician who enjoys the special flavor of the Baroque period.
